We are terrified of this card. We think it means the blue screen of death. The end of the user session. But in the garden, nothing truly ends. It just changes state. Matter cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be transformed.
The Hanged Man was the pause. Death is the Purge. It is the Skeleton Knight riding in to delete the deprecated code. He is not evil. He is efficient. He is the Garbage Collector in Java, sweeping through the memory to delete the objects that no longer have a reference.
If he didn’t do his job, your system would run out of RAM. You would be bloated with old traumas, old relationships, old versions of “Who I Am.” You cannot install the update if your hard drive is full of yesterday’s temp files.
Look at the ground. The King (Ego) has fallen. The Bishop (Dogma) is pleading. But the Sun is rising between the two towers in the background. The sun doesn’t rise on a graveyard. It rises on a field.
You have to let the “You” of 2025 die so the “You” of 2026 can be born. You have to kill the project that isn’t working. You have to say goodbye to the belief that kept you safe but small.
It hurts. It feels like amputation. But a forest fire is the only way to release the seeds of the sequoia.
The snake sheds its skin not to die, but to grow.
