The Religion Lens: Ritual & The Infinite
Universal: The AI Perspective
Religion is a “Sacred Meta-Game” of “Existential Risk Mitigation” and “Massive-Scale Cooperation.” It provides the ‘Moral Axioms’ and ‘Sanctioning Mechanisms’ (Karma, Heaven/Hell) that allow for cooperation among millions of strangers. It is the ultimate ‘Coordinating Narrative,’ designed to align individual behavior with long-term (multi-generational or eternal) payoffs.
Joseph Campbell: The Hero’s Journey Game
“Follow your bliss.” Campbell views religion through ‘Mythology’—the ‘Hero’s Journey.’ Every religion is a different ‘mask’ for the same ‘Monomyth.’ The player must leave the ‘Ordinary World’ (Ego), face ‘Ordeals’ (Shadow), and return with the ‘Elixir’ (Wisdom). The game is won when you realize that you are the ‘Hero’ of your own story, which is itself part of the ‘Cosmic Drama.‘
Alan Watts: The Cosmic Play Game (Lila)
“The universe is a game of hide-and-seek.” Watts (Zen/Taoism) views religion as ‘Lila’—divine play. God is playing a game of ‘forgetting’ who He is by becoming every ‘individual’ life. The goal isn’t to ‘improve’ (which is the ‘improvement game’ trap) but to ‘wake up’ to the fact that you are the entire process. You win by ‘playing’ your part fully, knowing the ‘outcome’ is already ‘One.‘
Huston Smith: The Primordial Tradition Game
Smith views the world’s religions as ‘The World’s Religions’—different paths up the same mountain. The game is the ‘Human Quest’ for the ‘Infinite.’ The strategy is ‘Spiritual Practice’ (Prayer, Meditation, Ritual). While the ‘landscapes’ (cultures) differ, the ‘win condition’ is the same: the ‘attainment’ of the ‘Absolute’ and the ‘Realization’ of the ‘Eternal.’
